Week 1 Snow

Week 1 of 2026

Snow

It all looks very beautiful...but only for a few days - then we wish for back to "normal".

We had to cancel Wednesday for the Day Activity group and we have cancelled this weekend for the kids.

Getting here is the problem.

Janny bought extra food on Tuesday as the forecast was extreme for Wednesday. A couple of supermarkets already had empty shelves...

...and she walked to the shop on Friday as much for the exercise as anything else.

The council workers have been keeping the cycling path very clean and "millions of kilos" of salt have been sprayed on the main roads in the 3 Northern Provinces - Friesland Groningen and Drenthe

2026  We have had the little workhorse for 20 years now - money well spent, indeed.

A neighbour cleared a few driveways along our stretch....

One of the apartment kids made an igloo...(he couldn't get to school so he said he had to do "something")

16cm by Wednesday...

Also on Wednesday, Janny made a snow "angel"...

The residents also helped with clearing the driveway and walkways...

On Friday, we both jumped as we  heard a roar that sounded like rolling thunder...but it was the snow sliding off the roof!

...so we had to make a walkway to the firewood...(note Boeke out there helping)

Just as a note of interest...The huge IKEA shop in Groningen was closed due to the volume of snow on the flat roof.

This is the roof of a sports hall in Utrecht...

We have a flat roof which has given me troubles for nearly 30 years - we finally have a quote to replace it (it occasionally leaks when it fills up like a swimming pool - ie when the drains get blocked with leaves and/or moss) - it used to be a barn...

From DutchNews.nl on Friday...

The KNMI weather bureau issued a code amber weather warning for the northern provinces of Friesland, Drenthe and Groningen, as well as the Wadden Sea islands, on Friday morning as strong winds and more snow moved in.

Qbuzz (bus) services in Groningen and Drenthe have been cancelled until at least midday because of the weather, which is causing drifting on the roads.

Nevertheless, the transport ministry’s roads department said motorists had adapted to the weather conditions, although there had been a few accidents on the A7 and A32.

Train services in the north are operating a “winter” timetable, with fewer trains, and passengers travelling south will have to change at Zwolle.

The freezing temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend, with heavy frosts overnight.

There may be more snow in the south on Saturday, and Sunday will be dry with sunshine, but the temperature will remain below freezing in most places. In the north, the temperature could plunge to as low as -15°

Warmer air will move into the Netherlands from the west on Monday, kicking off the thaw, Weeronline said.

From 2020...we've been lucky to have such good dogs :-)

We had snow in 2012 as well...

...and yesterday, I took Boeke for a long walk while Janny watched the skating on TV...

video of Boeke in the snow..

I sometimes read little stories written by Yaroslava in Kiev - the daily ordeals - and other mind-numbing stuff at the moment - walking in the forest is a good way to turn off, if only for a little while.
